KEZY
in suburban Anaheim, CA was a very listenable station even
though it was forever overshadowed by much larger competitors
in the City of Angels (and to a lesser extent from big San
Diego sticks). By any other standard however, it cooked
as a Top 40 station, initially on AM and later made the
transition to FM.
Mere
months after I started at
KWIZ in
Santa Ana, CA the format was changed to Korean. Program
Director, Chris Cox quickly landed on his feet as the new
Program Director of KEZY. After his arrival the station
increased the amount of '80s & '90's Gold product into
the mix to attract Adult demos left disenfranchised by the
sudden demise of KWIZ.
In rapid order, he hired me back to
work for him. Doing so on my part was primarily for the
the fun of it as I also wound up on the air simultaneously
at KLAC in
LA as well as on over 100 stations coast to coast on Unistar's
'Oldies Channel'.
Although
KEZY was still primarily a current-driven Adult CHR during
the week, each weekend it did 'Rock Block' weekends, a bit
of a misnomer as at least 50% of the artists featured in
double plays (Mariah Carey and Michael Bolton come to mind)
were definitely not from the Rock spectrum! Nevertheless,
despite the 'EZ' in the call letters, this was one Hot Rockin'
station that was a real pleasure to be on the air at. The
tape above is from 1992, several months before I left to
join
STAR 98.7 in
LA which when launched in its initial incarnation as an
'80's & '90's Hot AC, basically stole KEZY's format!
Today, Salem's Contemporary Christian, 'The Fish' is on
95.9.
